While it's obvious that I have spent a fair amount of DM on this account. It's how you manage DM that's important to understand. Buy it cheap when it's on sale and don't spend it until they have cash back sales or specific item discounts. For example, it's not smart to buy it at normal price when you know that they're going to have 30% to 50% sales on DM each month, and not too long after that sale they almost always have a 15% cash back sale on all DM you spend ingame. Make the most of your money and you will benefit more from what you spend. Try not to spend it on things you could lose, I spend most of it on infrastructure (economy) and research. Don't buy items that reduce time to build or research things, to me they're a waste. If you buy items, the just buy boosters for RES production (moon fields can also be beneficial). But be warned, spend too much DM and you limit your abilities ingame to do certain things, there are pros and cons to DM.

Empty cargo ships and idle fleet slots are not productive. I know a lot of people don't want to be bothered with raiding inactives. But if you don't have a lot of time to hunt fleets, raid inactives. I raid inactive accounts all day long to increase my daily RES production.

Expos, if you're not capitalizing on the expos (and sending just the right amount of ships) then you are losing out on serious profit potential. I send out 4 fleets of expos 4 to 5 times per day with 91LC/1DES/1ESP and I have made millions in profits from either RES or ships that get added to the fleet. I've only lost 2 of those fleets to the abyss...and I've been doing this everyday since I started. Make profitable hits. Don't waste fleet slots sat bashing or being vindictive and hitting people because you have malice in your heart. Hit for profit. Recall if there is no profit to be had, and find something else better to occupy your time. Don't drive people away from the game by constantly harassing them for no profit and just bashing them. It's not healthy and the uni pretty much comes to despise you...like that jerk who bashed a MINEr out there in G9 and drove him into v mode. What did you win by doing that? Another player that gets driven out of the game because you're a vindictive troll? If it's your goal to drive people out and make them quit...then I guess you're winning. I have the APIs, I've seen the CRs...you're not a good sportsman.

Invest in your mines first, then research, then fleet, and then just enough defense that corresponds to how often you are able to login to spend/move RES. It's a balance between being profitable and not profitable. But don't turtle, no one likes turtles unless it's in a soup.

I'm not an economist, so I don't know the correct terms but I believe the "law of increasing returns", "recapitalization", and the "multiplier effect" are probably apt here. Invest in mines, spend a good chunk on the money you make from raiding/fleet crashing on mines to increase production.

You can't subsist on just raiding and crashing anymore, these aren't like the old numbered unis with thousands of active players and targets to loot. You have to diversify your investment portfolio.

Good time management skills are a must. Time is both your worst enemy, and you greatest ally in this game. Fight against your OCD and avoid patterns...but let people see the patterns you want them to see.

Fleetsave your ships and RES. Make sure you understand how a phalanx works and what it can and cannot see. If you don't have a moon, invest in them now...and go big, in the late game you'll wish you had.

Maintain situational awareness. Look at your galaxy view everyday and scroll your browser down to that 15 slot to see who has moved in next door.

Use these forums to gather information, and not just the Dorado section. Read the CR sections of the other forums and learn how some of the hits are made and bring that knowledge back with you. If you don't understand, ask...you'd be surprised how often people are willing to share tactics, tips, and techniques with you when you ask. And knowing how to hit someone, also helps you learn how to avoid it. Also if people are playing in multiple unis, the enemy of your enemy is your friend.

Find an active alliance. If you're in an alliance that doesn't communicate and are not online often, find another one. Activity breeds more activity. Compete internally for things like who is gonna reach which level mine or research first, motivation is a key to success.

Find a mentor. But don't be a nag and beg for RES. I learned from the best, mostly from reading his HoFs and asking him for tips, tactics, and procedures. Greatest Serbian player I've ever met in this game, named Qzman. I also learned a lot from people I played with like Dragon111, Gatekeeper, Lucifer, Kriton, Testudo and a whole host of others from the old days.

Be nice to people. I mean, yeah...we're playing a game where we take things from others but you can still be polite about it. Unless they're a jerk, then it's open season. I'm only brash with people who are jerks...so if I've treated you brashly, been vindictive towards you or shown you malice it's because you drew first blood with me and I hold grudges. I do not forgive and forget, and I am very patient.

And lastly. Use legal add-ons and scripts like Antigame and Universeview for your browser. And donate to their continued R&D as the developers for those have put a lot into them and they will make your experience 100% more rewarding.
