We discovered that he was not connected at server reset time.
So, at first, the moment we prepared to attack and sent his planet, the lights turned on and we had no choice but to conclude that it was a connection and withdraw all our fleets.
However, after that, he found out that unrelated planets kept turning on for a moment and then turning off (the planets that actually showed no activity upon checking) and that there was actually no movement in that month.
So we decided to be a little adventurous.
He decided that the light was automatically turned on by some kind of program, but it was not connected.
So we included a slow Death Star to attack with our underpowered fleet, and in fact it kept flashing on and off while we were attacking.
But in the end, he was not connected, and we caught him with an additional attack (the additional attack was to attack him after a draw and obtain an additional fleet of about 3 billion and resources of 10 billion).
He logged in about 20 minutes after the attack ended and only took about 10 billion worth of metal.
