As discussed in a related thread, it seems pretty silly that the three ships (Crawler, Pathfinder, and Reaper) are locked to classes. This doesn't actually affect what class players chose to be, since you can just pop one of the many, many free class change tokens to make the ships, before swapping back to your original class. Instead, it just serves as an annoyance that makes the game slightly more annoying to play.
The original intention of locking the ships to classes was 1) to associate each of the ships with a class and more importantly 2) to encourage usage of the new marketplace feature. They weren't intended to be only available to each class, on release, it was really trivial to buy the ships from someone of the appropriate class. Since marketplace has been removed, this now adds an annoying barrier to making these ships that wasn't there on release (and arguably wasn't intended).
As for the first reason, each of the ships (except for maybe the Reaper) still clearly benefits from being the appropriate class:
- Crawlers get 50% more bonus from being Collector, can be overloaded for an additional 50% performance, and also has a higher crawler softcap with collector + geologist.
- Pathfinders improve the resource gains and ship finds on expeditions, and stacks with Discoverer's own increased expedition finds.
- Reapers don't interact directly with General's mechanics, but General class encourages attacking and combats in general, and Reapers' special resource harvest mechanic only matters if you're using them in combat.
I think there's no real case to keep Crawlers and Pathfinders locked to their respective classes, and only a very weak case to keep Reaper locked. As a result, I would like to suggest to Gameforge to allow all three classes to make all three kinds of ships.
If the main point of contention is that Reaper doesn't really interact with General, my proposal is that Reapers get an additional +2 WSA if you're general, which they could really use since they don't benefit from any ship-specific Lifeform techs.
