Imagine a new Ogame

  • Hi, I didn't have much to do yesterday so I thought about how to make a better ogame in my perspective, from scratch.

Just a quick word about me, i usually come back once in a while to play ogame on last universe out, and I play on it for like 3 to 6 weeks maybe. So I never played on a "late game" account but I think I have read enough on the internet to understand how it's like, but that's still why I ask you for your opinons on my thoughts.

(Btw it's not like a suggestion cause it would be too hard to do and not profitable for Gameforge, it's essentially just for fun).

(And obviously everything down here is just my point of view)

So before anything else, I tried listing the problems I see in the game :

    - Game is so much P2W

    - Beginning early on a server is a massive advantage compared to other and it snwoballs really hard (like it's normal to have an advantage if you're older on the server than others, but I feel like it's near impossible to catch up to others if you begin late)

    - Weaker/casual players usually leave quite fast the game

    - The community aspect seems pretty bad

So then I focused on causes for those problems :

    - Dark matter exists

    - The only goal is the point ladder which implies several problems. Point are gain exponentially so it's hard for weaker player to catch up. Also obviously players will seek for the most optimised way to progress which is feed on small fish. WHY ? Because when attacking a weaker player, you literally lose nothing anyway (except deut if he see it coming), because your fleet attack first, while attacking someone at your level is always at a loss.

    - Casual players always end up doing a mistake and get recycled by (way) stronger players. If the player is new and didn't build a space dock, then he just lost everything and even if he built it and save around 35% of his fleet, i feel that a lot just question themselves like "Is it even worth it to continue playing the game, being still targeted by those big fish, and probably never be able to catch up to them to get revenge ?". And I assume it's where most people quit (myself included). It seems to me that the only way to potentially have fun in the game in the long run is to start day one on a new universe.

    - For alliances, I actually need your opinion on that because i didn't played a lot with other people but its seems it's just used for group attack/def and trading

Now for the dreamed game of mine and the solutions i thought of (assuming GF is not a greedy company which is utopian):

    - NO DM lol

    - Setting an objective that makes a universe lifespan between 2 to 4 months maybe. It's probably the hardest part to think of but it should be something that requires cooperation between miners and fleeters in an alliance. Once an alliance met the requirement to win, the universe will restart (maybe a day or a week after so people can prepare themselves) and so on. It would bring clear goal and reasons to join an alliance (since it would probably be the only way to win) and it would allow players to focus on a "game" if they have time to, or skip some if they are busy IRL in this period.

    - Fights would not be turn based but simultaneous (both fleets fire at the same time then suffer losses) (so that attacking weaker players isn't free anymore). On top of that, to make attacks on bigger players attractive, 80% of the attacking fleet would go in the debris field while 40% of the defending fleet would go in the debris field. And finally, I would make the protection for weaker players depends on your points. For example : you only get 25% of resources of players 4 times weaker than you, 0% for players 10 times weaker than you, and you could not even attack player 20 times weaker than you.

    - Because the lifespan of servers would be low, the "miner is better in the long run" strategy would not be relevant anymore, so mines should give way more resources, so the difference in production between a miner and a fleeter has time to be relevant.

There are a lot more things that I thought of but there are not well enough develop for me to tell them, and the post is already long enough.

Obviously, there is still a lot of things to refine but I would be happy to know what you think about it.

And I could really appreciate if you help me think of ways player would break the system, that I haven't thought of.

Thank you for reading to the end :smile2:.

  • An OGame without DM would be Amazing and a dream, but if the gameforge don't gain money from this game how do you pay for your server and the people you hired for maintenance?

So i understand the need of DM, but they should put a brake to packs, or rework the system for make more fair and competitive for all the player

  • Gameforge has a right to make money so no dark matter wouldn't really work. The main issue is the ability to purchase resource packs, that has made it too heavily pay to win

Tbh I think this is a very big misconception. As somebody who works in this field, a server like Ogame isn't costing more than maybe 50$-100$ a month for Gameforge (battle calculations included), even less since I guess they have enterprise offers, and around 20e more for game operators. Even if a server is not producing money it still can be used in order to increase the player base, leading to players starting new servers where they will actually spend money (loss leader). Is just that the Gamefore are way to stiff in order to wiggle things around. We already have a chaos server, why can't we just have one server without DM ? :flowers:

  • We already have a chaos server, why can't we just have one server without DM ? :flowers:

Coz server without rules is not the same as server without customers u see :D

but on the serious note years back we have had a server without DM, problems was few

firstly it was the og server without redesign features afaik no astro etc which imo is nice but those updates done since are essential to modern gameplay

and secondly coz as always wherever we as players go , we bot/cheat/abuse bugs that was present with old game version to our own advantage

we cry for no DM server so others cant buy ranks and points and we beg GF for even playfield and when we get one, we run ninja expos 24/7, dupe push n pull ourselves with friends arrange crash and straight up feed 1acc to make it bigger.

cant have nice things, its not even GF at this point, its players we will wreck anything we put our hands on

  • Exactly! It's a vicious cycle. It's not a bad thing to move on from that project.

I wonder is it possible to copy account like they do for testing or graveyard and put them in fast paced bigger eco, research.

With a time limit of that particular uni in which player can grow an account and exchange for original. There are accounts in long hiatus or plain safe active mode

( bunker or turtle with minimal fleet)

If you want to preserve new players engage the experienced ones to be proactive. Alliance interaction and whatnot.

Also, I know it's a risk with every new idea that was in a big update. I don't think updates cause downfall. It's better to try some suggestions and reverse if it's a no go after a while then nothing at all.

Marketplace was a good thing with reactivating some of the players. Which is now a no go project for a good reason.

In future , maybe try something different and fail then stagnation ( I'm advocating for many suggestions sent )

Not touching game mechanic with cosmetics was a good idea.

I would try something that doesn't jeopardize long lasting or big accounts rather than change game mechanic because of that long lasting player base that isn't for it (and they have a point)

Ahh, it's just a rant from a spur of the moment to no one. Not really passionate/invested about what I said.

  • If your in an active enough alliance which use discord then you have the ability to stop so called big fish attacks especially with moons and careful planning making sure an ally is nearby most of your planets. You can ACS defend if there are a few small fish especially with jump gates.

For me the game needs a method of more strategy in attacks rather than the bigger fleet wins.

For example certain ships are exposed depending on the planets temperatures, maybe add in atmosphere density which effects fire rates, maybe have bonus strengths and weaknesses depending on the time of day you attacks.

    Give more features to defences

All examples of course. It does get a little dry especially in older universes

  • Dark matter isn't even the root problem. You can get more activity in universe simply by removing ability to build defense on moons. When that happens you'll see 500mil points fleeters attacking 10-20-50bil points players easily and all is good . Everyone would have a target and could retaliate which would be epic for making the game more active. Nowadays you have whales and each one has 50-200k plasmas on moon and 200-500k plasmas on planets, basically non attackable by anyone beside probably top5 players...every whale is almost playing singleplayer game. But if you do make such changes then whales will be angry hahaha. They will have scrubs with 1bil points spying them all the time

Also defense does not need any buffs. Same MSU value invested into def+LF is much stronger then fleet+LF needed to take that down. And just to reiterate, if that change would occur small fleeters/alliances could actually "punish" anyone bashing their miners. But as i said, i don't think anyone would vote yes for that because it would make whales targets for everyone unlike now.

  • Look to my coming at first light on the 5th day. At dawn, look to the East

  • ALWAYS hilarious a decade later where the same topic gets recycled and some of you dummies expecting a magical change (Dark matter).

Popped back in here after a few years to see how the game is going:

    1. Surprised it's still alive.

    2. Don't regret quitting the game one bit after a decade + of playing.

    3. Some of should quit and no one will care.
