Old Interviews and Select Old CRs (A Walk Through History)

  • There was some uncertainty about what would and wouldn't survive the current changes to the board when this topic was made. I was mostly tossing every interview I could find here from old Galactic News Network posts and the original run of Spidey News Network posts. That was simple enough, but then I thought "what if all the old combat reports are lost?" and began diving through those too. The archives from 2008 through 2012 are mostly gone so it's hard to know what will or won't survive.

Starting with the 12th post in this thread, there is a heading named "Best of the Deep Archives", though in retrospect it may be better thought of as "A Walk Through History". I went through the old CR threads of universes that got merged into Universe 1 at warp speed (but still felt very slow) to grab random events that I thought helped give a curated idea of what the game used to be like in the period the archive covers (mostly 2006, with a little 2007). These are snippets of the topics, with replies to the main posts cut down to those that got the sentiment of responses across. The archives didn't retain information about which topic belonged to which universe so that context may be completely lost in some cases. Certain threads were crazy and impossible to represent properly in this reduced format but, if they happen to still be around after the board rework, the truncated version will hopefully give you reason to search out the full thread. In some instances finding the full thread is well worth it for how crazy some of these historical events were.

There are actually a lot of good tips and old strategies that would still be valid today hidden among these old posts, though some may be better left in the past. I also found more interviews I hadn't caught my first time through which will be posted toward the end, as well as a few other oddities and a short list of changes to the game/when they occurred hidden somewhere in there too. I had thought about making a topic full of old interviews for the sake of preservation anyway so I guess this serves that purpose as well as being an homage to the OGame of old.

For those who take the plunge and check out some of this historical data, hopefully you have some fun doing that. If nothing else, seeing how much the game has changed can be fascinating. A good portion of these are from before Dark Matter even existed, which truly is like entering a different world!

Edited once, last by Neotinea ().

  • A few other interviews I'd picked out a while back, including the original SNN interviews, I'm going to see how easy it is/isn't to preserve these by adding the old interviews mentioned so far to this thread. I'm sure I've missed some good ones so feel free to mention them or add them yourself.

  • Best of the Deep Archives

Now on to something completely different. There is a lot of interesting and strange stuff in the archives that probably never would have been paid attention to again if not for the news of the archives dying. I have by no means looked at every thread but am checking out anything that stands out. Before they are lost forever, let's take a look back at some old achievements, old drama, and weird stuff from OGame past.

Coolkiller is banned (February 18th, 2007)

If you go to the archives, there are two pinned threads. One is about about the new 20% tag that was added for hits, which seems like important information everyone would need to know. The other, at the very top of every page you click, is about the banning of coolkiller. What did he do? Why did anyone looking through OGame history need to remember this name in particular? I have no idea, but here is the contents of the thread that may help clarify what this ruffian was like.

Lucifux Is Deceived (April 16th, 2006)

Darth tyranis is a bad guy, or so lucifux would have us believe. What did this dark side leaning player do to incite such anger? Is there justice? Is he even angry at the right person? Let's find out.

Skip60.0 Attacks An Inactive And Leaves People In Awe (April 21st, 2006)

People are genuinely amazed and not trolling. This is also a history making RIP attack in Universe 12. Can you guess why?

Spartakus Has His Best Night (April 22nd, 2006)

Ahh, the good old days. Remember when the very act of playing OGame was fun? This guy certainly did. That is, until lucky loser came along to ruin his night.

Deneb Was Always A Troll (April 24th/25th, 2006)

A familiar sight for the modern OGamer. Deneb antagonizing another player, getting warned, and a flame war ensuing. All happening nearly 20 years ago.

  • When Showing Off Your Intelligence Doesn't Quite Work Out (January 25th, 2006)

The player Smart believed himself to be at least three times greater than Mailman (based on the greater than signs) but did the hit live up to the claim?

    ADDAR BRINGS A CROWD (February 20th, 2006)

Back in the day if you got banned then you didn't go into vacation mode, instead the entire universe got a free chance to attack all of your planets. It seems as though bman was prone to using some bad language and this was the result. This would be bman's goodbye hit. The thread had over 150 replies, mostly discussing the merit (or lack thereof) of a hit like this, or whether bman should have been banned at all, but getting people that worked up is worth at least saving the CR that caused the controversy.

    Sandrew's First HoF Is A Ninja! (May 3rd, 2006)

There's nothing particularly spectacular about this, but that's why it's here. This is a good look into how the game was for most people. Small accomplishments, big pride. But there was something special about the fleet he ninja'd that otherwise made it very difficult to hit...

Tarmac Gets Philosophical (May 7th, 2006)

We all know the standards for posting a hit. You need the correct name, alliance, and total damage, but Tarmac was too poetic to go through all of that. The title "Loss" ends up having another meaning when big mean moderator Cass interjects.

    An Accomplishment? (May 7th, 2006)

We all start somewhere and what is achievement other than a personal goal fulfilled? For OH REALLY FEARLESS, the standard was a bit lower than that of others.

Was It Even Wurth It? (May 7th, 2006)

Wurth (aka Jack Bauer) was considered one of the best players of his era and this hit shows just how contentious success can be.

Early OGame Turtle Bashing (May 9th, 2006)

When you imagine a Turtle style player, what do you envision? How big is that defense? Well, in 2006, you might be surprised.

Dragen Protects His Treasure (May 10th, 2006)

Sometimes you get upset and you feel the need to attack the person who upset you. In OGame that is typical, but it helps to probe them first.

  • Majin Makes It Big (April 21st, 2006)

Nowadays RIPs are a dime a dozen, but back in the day killing a RIP was a right of passage, a big event where a player began to feel as if they were on the path to dominating a universe. For Majin (Plug In Baby), this was his moment.

Elusive Lives Up To The Name (May 4th, 2006)

This is an example of an old school tactics hit that a lot of the best players used at the time to try to go undetected. This strategy was more effective in the past because the leader board didn't update instantly and there was very limited access to data about planet locations. If you weren't checking ranks of the people who moved into the solar system next to you then you would have no idea what was coming.

k4mik4z3 Gets On The Board! (May 8th, 2006)

A simple attack and the first taste of a rage message from a defender. He was off to a good start and, thankfully, time helped cooler heads prevail for the defender.

2good4u Loses The CR, Posts Anyway (May 12th, 2006)

You put in the work, you've made it all happen, and next thing you know the CR is gone. You're so flustered that not only do not make a proper title but you also post it in the wrong universe! And now it remains a part of OGame history.

OMGSTUFF Finally Finds Something (May 13th, 2006)

You know how it is. You're searching for targets, you're probing all over but nothing. There are too many people taking all the good farms and good hits. But on this day, OMGSTUFF made a breakthrough.

KiNg Of SuN Does What KiNg Of SuN Does (May 13th, 2006)

Not everyone needs a lot of words to get the point across. Some people speak exclusively in cool catchphrases. I feel sorry for the mysterious debris stealer.

    Outkast19 Is Halfway There (May 14th, 2006)

You've got your shiny new phalanx and you're ready to test it out. And you're in luck! A fleet that is the perfect size for you to crash! Without hesitation you send your ships along but meet an unexpected end. Woot Lord tells us the story.

Big Freaking Drama Featuring Fatty And Volrath (May 18th, 2006)

A betrayal? A spy? Maybe a bit of both? The intrigue is palpable with this one. Volrath posts the hit as the defender and chaos ensues.

  • Jackie Chan Lives Up To The Name (May 19th, 2006)

Remember when "pwned " was a thing people tried to make into a word? Like the sound of shooting something mixed with the idea of "totally owning that n00b", except even less cool? This is an homage to that and also the memory of how disliked the Rampage alliance was at the time because everything one of their members posted got downvoted. Including this.

    Not A Real Buddy (May 21st, 2006)

You think to yourself "this person is cool, I want to be in contact with them all the time" so what do you do? In OGame you add the person to your buddylist. Now you're friends for life. Or your OGaming life. Or maybe not at all. Or maybe someone new has taken over the account and has no idea who you are. Deadman tells us a story about that. But is it the truth?

    Don't Be Sad Leslie (May 26th, 2006)

It may have been sooner than you expected, you may have been ahead of your time, but eventually vacation mode consumes everyone.

The JAVF / Kiwan Rivalry No One Knew About (May 26th, 2006)

Sometimes you're the little dog, sometimes you're the big dog, and in OGame sometimes the little dog becomes the big dog. This struggle of determination and perseverance was long lost in the archives but it's light is finally able to shine again! JAVF explains...

The Redemption Of Bhiscan (May 27th, 2006)

Jin Roh, the alliance, and Bhiscan, the player, were pretty big deals back in the day. This post by Bhiscan shows how even top players have to bounce back sometimes.

The End Of (A Few Of The Battleships Of) Candlemass (May 27th, 2006)

Candlemass, aka Graf Zahl, was considered to be one of best players to play the game. The assumption was that if a merge happened and there was a big battle between all the top players, Candlemass would win. We never quite got to find out just how well he would do when that hypothetical became a reality (he made a hit, urza stole the debris, and not long after Graf Zahl retired because he didn't have as much time or motivation for the game), but in his day he was unstoppable. That is unless you were turkkopat and had unexpected ninja skills. Let's hear from turkkopat...

Deus Accepts The Challenge (May 30th, 2006)

There are a lot of valid complaints about playing the game outside of what the rules intend and plenty of people have done that over the years. It would be a less valid complaint about a perfectly acceptable and common game element (the phalanx) that would set Deus on the path to accomplish a new challenge.

The Fifth Time Isn't The Best (June 1st, 2006)

KuteFrog had a busy day, their fleet was flying this way and that, so when a new opportunity popped up they didn't quite have the ships they needed to make the hit they wanted. But why let that stand in the way? Fly shippies! Fly

  • What Would You Do To Save Your Death Balls? (June 3rd, 2006)

It was a typical day, Godfather8769 was phalanxing and probing around when he noticed some RIPs from a player named Comet. He worked out timing and launched his fleet. Then he receives a message from her with a very odd request, one that he initially agrees to only to pull back from after thinking it over. Here is Godfather's post about the situation.

IPMs Have Always Been Annoying (June 6th, 2006)

ADDAR of RancoR was busy dominating Universe 5 when someone began to target his alliance mates. This player wasn't much of a fleeting threat, but was looking to make life difficult for him and his allies. This wasn't going to stand for very long and ADDAR teaches an important lesson about what is important to do if you're going to annoy people with IPMs.

    Wraith02 In Universe 8 Was A Thing (June 6th, 2006)

There Wraith02 was, not getting much respect in Universe 1 and having been targeted by a lot of top players, both for JeB's association with KohrAh (the big, bad guys of Universe 1 in the early days) and for being a staff member. He needed a new start and U8 would be that for him, but would it go any better? And will someone learn a valuable lesson about moon use?

    What's Your Excuse? (June 7th, 2006)

We've all heard various reasons why people get crashed. They were in traffic. Their child was sick. They were in the hospital. Their alarm didn't go off. They forgot to check the game and it was their own fault. This, however, may be the most unique reason for being crashed of all. One player decided to let fate determine their future; or so they say.

Graf Zahl Gets Revenge On Turkkopat (June 8th, 2006)

It was an amazing accomplishment when turkkopat kind of ninja'd some of Candlemass' battleships during a failed raid attempt. This may have gone by with little notice, but the victory march by turkkopat could not be stopped, at least not until he lost even more ships.

Beyonder Battles The Deutless (June 9th, 2006)

Sometimes we build fleet. We like seeing the numbers go up so we build more fleet. Then eventually we build so much fleet that maybe it's gotten a little out of hand and we're not fully prepared to move that fleet around. Beyonder, a great fleeter of yonder time, demonstrates why you should only build as much fleet as you can afford to pilot.

More Wise Words From KiNg Of SuN (June 11th, 2006)

There was people who play OGame, then there was people who attacked KiNg Of SuN and was destroyed by him. Very ill advised.

    Wraith02 Runs Into Some U8 Problems (June 16th, 2006)

Isn't it annoying when you're minding your own OGaming business and other pesky people are probing you? Then, even more annoyingly, they begin sending ships to attack you! But Wraith02 was not going to stand for this. This would not be SilentAssassin's day.

  • This is the one and only interview I was able to find that I did for uni 8 on August 13th 2009. I know there were a few more, but they must be gone now. This was with Akira, the original owner of the account later known as Pinky. coughbetrayedbydenebcough

This interview was when I was 16 year old btw.

  • When A Loser's Luck Runs Out (March 7th, 2006)

We all need our rest, especially those who marathon OGame and have completely screwed up their sleep schedule. Add on top of that the duties of dashing the hopes of aspiring HOF posters by closing their threads and life caught up to lucky loser. Smith and Han Solo of the Rebel alliance would be there to turn his nap into a dirt nap.

But I Thought OGame Was Real Life? (June 6th, 2006)

MordoR and wayne were at war, which was a meeting of two juggernauts. Fatty (using the name Warden), not far off from the Volrath drama, would make a huge contribution by taking down Ch3cka. The reason for getting crashed? Well, a pretty understandable one.

The Ultimate Heartbreak (April 30th, 2006)

You're on the verge of accomplishing a long term goal. You built your first battleship, you're a relatively accomplished fleeter, and now it's time to take that next step. You're so close to having enough resources but an attack comes in that sends your dreams up in flames. This would be the circumstance under which Captain Stryker would say goodbye.

When You Accelerate When You Should Have Braked (June 18th, 2006)

One day mosquito was going about their usual business, sucking blood and buzzing around unseen, when they began an unusual attack. It was a fleetsave, or it was intended to be. I still can't believe GameForge hasn't fixed the bug that put the attack and debris field options so close together after all this time. Lithodora shows the results.

The Killer Becomes The Killed (June 21st, 2006)

You've just made a big hit on an enemy alliance and it's time for some rest. The biggest player in their alliance is nowhere big enough to take you down so there is no need to worry. Lotnar was determined to get revenge however and was willing to traverse dark places to get it.

KiNg Of SuN Finally Meets His Match (June 25th, 2006)

When you're in the Top 10 of your universe and most players don't dare to mess with you, it's easy to forget that there are other experienced players out there who are still a threat to you. The Patrician (Sleeper Service) was a Universe 1 veteran who knew a thing or two about dealing with bigger, stronger players, briefly holding the #1 HoF slot for biggest crash in U1. When KiNg Of SuN came probing, Patrician left a tasty treat for him to discover but the cake was a lie.

A Dream (Or Nightmare) Team Smash Up (June 29th, 2006)

There was a time when there was no deconstructing ships, so once you had built a bunch of solar satellites, for example, there was no breaking them down and getting part of the res back. Try as you might to protect them, it was often impossible long term and some found it easier to ask a friend to crash them so at least the debris field could be harvested. Not everyone had such foresight however. This hit is relevant not just for that but because of the names teaming up to make this happen. Having a big player after you is a challenge, but having two of the biggest and most accomplished players in all of OGame after you...well, this was bound to be the result.

The Formation Of The RIP Bash (July 2nd, 2006)

You're an active player. You've built up your defenses to protect from raids, you move your fleet when it's in danger and save appropriately. You're doing everything right. Then someone with an unstoppable number of ships is slowly lumbering its way toward your planet and there is nothing you can do about it. This is how the middle class gets destroyed. Also, those tech levels were super high for the time.

Excuse Me, What Kind Of Fleetsave Is This? (July 3rd, 2006)

You've got the fleet, you've got the deut, but it's important to be economical. There's no reason to waste unnecessary deut just because you're offline on occasion. You'll check in a few times a day, that fleet can sit and no one is going to bother it. If they try, you'll definitely be there to check on it. Right? Won't you?

  • Grudge Takes The #1 Alliance Slot From RancoR (April 24th, 2006)

While ADDAR was dominating Universe 5 and Deneb had been trolling Shade, there were few challengers that seemed capable of matching the combined might of their force. The entire RancoR alliance was made up of strong players on mostly strong accounts. But this powerful alliance had made some powerful enemies who finally started to find their stride, and though their first success wasn't against RancoR themselves, it was a major win and a moment that established a threat that could be the possible end of the RancoR dominance. Shade happily posted the following after a successful ACS with Wurth.

Turk On Turk Violence (June 20th, 2006)

It was common for Turkish players who came to .org to team up together and to make posts full of a "Turkish pride" sentiment. Some took it as racial elitism, others saw it as a people in the minority of the community trying to show they could match the talents of the top players of .org, but regardless it wasn't very common for there to be any noteworthy hits from one Turk onto another. But racial boundaries didn't stop people from being jerks to one another and Exar KuN would decide to take care of this one.

Check In Before You Take A NAP (July 5th, 2006)

It wasn't that long ago that we were taking a look at k4mik4z3's first ever hit and now he has made it to the #3 rank in his universe! Unfortunately, an account switch meant that the new player didn't know there was a NAP between the former player and k4mik4z3, which resulted in sparking off this hostile reaction.

    A Precious Battle (July 6th, 2006)

Sometimes you go to the enemy, sometimes the enemy comes to you. When you're a cave dwelling, ring obsessed creature who has long ago lost your humanity, impulsiveness can get the better of you and SaberX's patience would pay off.

Some Historic Figures Facing Off (July 7th, 2006)

It seems ninja's and Universe 1 experience go hand in hand as Winchester and sgtslappy teamed up to ninja two of the strongest players of the DH alliance. Winchester shares the accomplishment.

Never Trust Ziu (July 12th, 2006)

It's a tale as old as OGame. You are in a tight bind and you know you're a sitting duck for a nearby fleeter so you take the initiative. You ask for a 48 hour NAP and they accept. Phew, that's a load off. The only threat close enough to attack you is giving you the space you need to move elsewhere. Except Ziu may have appeared friendly and reasonable, but his HoF board post shows that Eaglewing made numerous mistakes, the biggest of which was thinking the NAP would save him.

Trying To Be Productive While Offline Backfires (July 12th, 2006)

You raid while you're actively playing the game and get a lot of profits that way. What if you could raid even more while you sleep? Then you'd be wasting less time and gaining more resources to outgrow everyone else! You get your ships together, attack a random inactive planet, and head to bed. Unfortunately, Outkast19 takes note of this habit and decides to do his own resource harvesting.

When Posting On The Board Becomes Your Downfall (July 10th, 2006)

One of the most important parts of keeping the game active is having a thriving community. Part of that community is sharing combat reports on the communal boards. Dawn of Destruction was growing quite large and, in aKanobi's opinion, quite tasty. It may not have been too long before Dawn of Destruction was too big for aKanobi to attack but aKanobi wouldn't let him get that far.

The Final Days Of KiNg Of SuN? (July 15th, 2006)

It was less than a month ago that KiNg Of SuN had put "Goodbye" in front of his name as if he was planning to quit the game. However, that OCrack is hard to shake and he kept on going, only to find himself being raided by people in the 500 ranks. It seems KiNg Of SuN may have dropped his last catchphrase while Tabris picked up his first HoF. He was quite over the moon about it until he realized it may not have been quite the accomplishment he'd thought it was.

That Takes Care Of That Probe-lem (July 16th, 2006)

Probes used to be able to carry resources. Not many, mind you, but enough for some inactive raiding and small amount of fast res shipping if you had enough of them. Needless to say, a large army of probes could be very annoying and Wurth was happy to make a dent in the probe armies of his universe.

Maybe Try Sending A PM First (July 16th, 2006)

There are many ways to stop an attack and a reliable one used to be a quick message of "hey, I'm online". This would tell the would be raider that you were likely to move your resources or ninja their ships, which would lead to them recalling. It would seem smellystudent ran into a player who tried a different means of letting them know they were online and smellystudent would end up profiting even more than he could have dreamed of as a result.
