+1 research level while conducting the same research

There's something that bugs my mind: what if, in the anniversary event, i choose a +1 research level while the same research is being upgraded somewhere?

For clarity, let's suppose i have hyperdrive 9, i am currently researching hyperdrive 10 and i select the +1 hyperdrive level reward. Do i...

1) get hyperdrive 10 instantly and the invested resources are RETURNED (i.e. they materialize on the planet that was conducting the research)

2) get hyperdrive 10 instantly and the invested resources are LOST (if this is the case, then the whole dev team needs to be tarred and feathered. just kidding. or not)

3) get hyperdrive 10 instantly and now my research is on hyperdrive 11 with the same deadline (but if i cancel it, i only get the resources invested in hyperdrive 10)

4) something else entirely

Please someone with a certain knowledge give me an answer. No ifs, no maybes, no "should be that", they are useless.

Sorry, but this is NOT the question i asked.

I didn't ask about the nature of the reward, i.e. if it's something that activates instantly upon selection or if it's an item that can be activated at a later time. That is something i already know.

What i am asking is what happens if i use the level +1 research item while i am researching the same thing.
